| Palazzo
Pretorio (previously known as Palazzo del Podestà): Built in the 13th-century, this
ex-council headquarters and local prison was completely destroyed by the 1919 earthquake
before being rebuilt in 1935. These days, the building is used as public library. The
impressive façade is adorned with the coats-of-arms of the various mayors that the town
has had over the years. Pieve di S. Lorenzo : This parish church was built in
the 10th century, on the site of a ruined Roman temple dating from the 6th century that
was dedicated to Bacchus. The church is said to be one of the oldest Romanesque examples
still extant, with its three naves divided by columns to the left and pillars to the
right. The structure of the roofs of the naves is also rather unusual, with the western
nave being held aloft by beams and trusses, while the eastern nave is vaulted. Inside, the
church has some memorable works of art and frescoes, including the so-called Black
Virgin, attributed to Giotto and dating from 1290.
Monastero di S. Caterina : This monastery dates from the early 1600s, and
located close to the S. Lorenzo parish church. Although the monastery itself is not of
particular architectural interest, it does contain some accomplished works of art. It can
be visitied by prior arrangement (tel. 055/8495924).
Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso de Miracoli : This church was built in the 18th
century to a design by Ticciani. The Carrara-marble floor is stunning, and, indeed,
the church features numerous other exceptional marble decorations. The Crucifix of the
Miracles, which dates from the 13th century, is conserved above the main altar, covered by
a portait by Bezzuoli. The Crucifix is shown to believers on certain religious
occasions.
Chiesa di S. Francesco : This church was constructed in the 13th century at the
behest of the Ubaldini family. Its beauty lies in its simplicity, with its single
nave supported by wooden trusses. The equally beautiful entranceway dates from the 14th
century.
Villa Pecori Giraldi :
This country house was constructed in the 13th century for the Giraldi family, and
features an impressive Liberty staircase leading tot he upper floor. The villa can be
visited by appointment on 055/8457197.
Pieve di S. Cresci in Valcava : Dating from the 12th
century, this is probably the most beautiful parish church in the whole of the Mugello. It
is structured around three naves, separated by two series of arches. The stunning square
bell tower is adjacent to the nave on the left of the church, as is the presbytery.
Chiesa di S. Maria ad Olmi : This church had but one nave
when it was first built in the 9th century. In 1280, the chapels were added, and in 1854,
two further naves were constructed. The colourful stained-glass window above the main
entrance depicts Christ the King. The church contains many other fine works of art.
The is a service every Sunday.
Le Fornaci di S. Lorenzo e Galileo Chini: This factory was
founded in 1906 by Galileo Chini and his cousin, and was an immediate success
thanks to the quality of its products, which included vases, jugs, tankards and wall
coverings. Although the building was badly damaged in the 1919 earthquake, levels of
production continued to increase. For commercial resons, the company diversified into the
production of coffee pots and bottles, and became a distinguished producer of glass
objects, such as lamps and chandeliers (to be seen in Villa Pecori Giraldi a Borgo ;Pieve
San Giovanni Maggiore).
Pieve di S. Felicita a Faltona :
This parish church was most probably constructed around the year 1000. It features a
central nave flanked by two lower naves. Ancient buildings surround the church, including
the Oratorio della Compagnia del SS. Sacramento, an oratory built in 1730. Although
hard to access as it is to some extent boxed in, the beautiful apse is of great historical
interest. The same cannot, unfortunately, be said for most of the works of art inside the
church.
Chiesa di S. Maria a Pulicciano : Originally built in the 13th century, this
church has been restored and modified several times since then. It has a single nave, and
inside features a beautiful Assumption of the Virgin, attributed to Andrea del
Sarto and an Annunciation, dating from the 15th century and located above the
western altar.
Chiesa di S. Michele : This church was built in 1715 on the site of the Abbey of
Vallombrosa. It features a single nave, and contains a great number of 18th- century
paintings along with a famous 15th-century crucifix, said to have miraculous properties.
Oratorio della Madonna dei Tre Fiumi : This oratory was constructed at the end
of the 16th century and takes its name from the place in which it is built, at the
confluence of three rivers. Previously, on the same site, there had been a tabernacle
dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Legend has it that, during the Feast of the Ascension in
1758, the image of the Virgin became real, and she cast a holy glance at some of the women
who were absorbed in prayer. After this miraculous occurrence, it was fully expected that
a similar phenomenon would re-occur. This expectation prompted the decision to raise up
the area where prayers were said so as to be closer to the Virgin. The church also
contains a wonderful Virgin with Child dating from the 16th century, attributed to
Jacopo Chimenti.
Chiesa di S. Michele a
Figliano : This church was completely rebuilt at the end of the 18th century, near the
site of the original building, which dated from five-hundred years earlier. The church is
structured around a single nave, and inside, there is a fresco depicting the Virgin
Annunciated, attributed to the Giotto school.
Monastero di Luco : This monastery was founded in 1871 by
the Camaldolese Sisters of S. Pietro a Luco, an order whose history dates back to the 11th
century. The magnificent cloister, built by Michelozzo, contains a portico
supported by stone columns that in turn support a vaulted transept. In the vegetable
garden at front of the monastery there is a little square-based chapel with its own
vaulted transept. Inside the chapel, there is a fascinating fresco attributed to Andrea
del Sarto, portraying Christ with the hoe and, in the lunette above, the Crucifixion
of Jesus. Unfortunately, the building has been utterly abandoned.
Chiesa di S. Pietro a Luco :
This church was built in the 13th century, and features an attractive 14th-century portico
adjacent to the front of the church. The church itself is full of valuable frescoes and
other works of art - the copy of the Deposition from the Cross, positioned above
the alter, being particularly outstanding. The original, painted by Andrea del Sarto,
can be found in the Uffizi Gallery. Close to the church, there is a small Chapel of
the Immaculate Conception containing a terracotta polychromy depicting the Virgin with
Child, referred to nowadays as the Divine Shepherdess.
Museo Casa dErci : This is museum that features a permanent exhibition
of peasant life in the area during the last century. Everything - from clothes to cooking
utensils, documents and photographs - has been carefully set up evoke the feeling of
travelling back in time. It opens in the afternoon, and bookings can be made by calling
055/8457197. |
