| Abbazia Benedettina di San Godenzo in Alpe : This abbey was rebuilt
in 1028 and has since been restored several times. It was entrusted to the Benedictine
order in 1070 by Bishop Trasmondo, and constitutes a highly typical example of Romanesque
monastic architecture. The interior features a wide stone staircase, and three naves. In
the left nave, there is a portrait of the Annunciation dating from the
16th-century, and a statue of St. Sebastian from 1506, sculpted by Baccio da
Montelupo. In the chancel there is a polyptych of the Virgin and four Saints
by Bernardo Daddi, while in the crypt there is a tomb with the mummified body of St.
Gaudenzio. Pieve di S. Babila a S. Bavello : Following
an earthquake in 1919, this church was rebuilt in stone in 1924, and the exterior features
a small bell tower. Inside, the single nave has modern works of art, including a Crucifix
in wood by Bartoli.
Chiesa di S. Martino a Castagno
d'Andrea : This church was restored after the war, and offers a fresco of Christ on
the Cross with the Virgin and St. John painted in 1958 by Pietro Annigoni .
Cascate dell'Acquacheta : This waterfall is situated where
the River Troncolosso meets Acquacheta. It is a spectacular sight, surrounded by unspoilt
countryside.
Dante in the XVI canto of the Inferno described the
As that river which is the first to hold its own course from Monte
Veso eastward on the left slope of the Apennines - called the Acquacheta above, before it
pours into its lower bed and loses that name at Forl - reverberates there over San
Benedetto dellAlpe by falling at one bound where there might have been a thousand. (Dante
Translation by JD Sinclair, New York, OUP 1939). |
